As a SPAB member – the Society for Protection of Ancient Buildings – we joined the nearly 9,000 strong SPAB membership, to support the work to help conserve our historic environment by :
- educating the next generation of heritage professionals
- campaigning for conservative repair
- advising homeowners and professionals alike, whilst championing traditional building materials and skills.
The SPAB membership still works in accordance with the principles laid out in its Manifesto written by William Morris in 1877.
At VORBILD Architecture, we believe in proposing architectural solutions to our Clients who are also sympathetic to the building itself. This is very important to us. We believe it is very important to consider and discuss this early on. The historic uniqueness of the building should always plan an important role in the design process.

SPAB membership
SPAB members are however expected to support and follow the philosophy of conservation and repair outlined in the Manifesto – you can read more about how we work with historic and listed buildings here.
The SPAB Repair of Old Buildings Course exists since the 1950s. They welcome architects, surveyors, and planners. However, buildings archaeologists, structural engineers, and conservation officers are welcome. In addition to these, this course is great for builders, craftspeople, and other building conservation professionals. Firstly, this intensive five-day course of lectures and visits is in the spring and autumn time each year.
Masterclasses, Seminars, and Scaffold Tours are held throughout the year – check the SPAB membership events listing for updates and more information, or contact the Education and Training Team.
SPAB also publishes very interesting magazines. There you can find articles about current refurbishments of old buildings. However, you can also read in-depth reports on how you can do this.
