Description
Art deco curved rear extension on three levels in West Hampstead. The ground floor extension has been completed in 2017.
Scope
This project has started with an internal redesign of an Art deco ground floor apartment in this four level art deco apartment block, and has grown into a three level rear extension of four meters.
Planning application with the London Borough of Camden
The planning process has been lengthy here following discussions with neighbours. We were asked to produce visuals on how our proposed extensions would look from each level of the neighbouring building. This is a principle which we have used successfully since – to visualise the planned changes to neighbours as well as our clients.
After successfully achieving planning permission, it was decided to carry out the ground floor rear extension first, including the works to the apartment and garden.
Art deco redesign
Since the rear extension was permitted with a curved outer edge, we were able to install a new curved true Crittal window there. This allowed us to take the opportunity to replace all of the original windows in the property with double glazed equivalents. These windows are magnificent, and their delicate shapes really help to give the property its original style back.
On the layout, we retained it mostly. The front reception room is still an office which can be turned into a bedroom. The rear reception room has been changed into the master suite. The hallway has been enlarged here to give more storage to this spacious flat.
The Art deco feel goes through the whole apartment, with door handles and furniture being selected to stay true to this time.
Fishy wallpaper
The family bathroom has been enlarged and now features a comfortable shower with a spacious vanity, and utilises a half height space under the communal staircase for a washer and dryer. Our tile design was done in close collaboration with the client who opted for a traditional tile layout, complete with feature band and stylish wallpaper.
The kitchen was previously limited to a small space, but now that the rear wall has been removed, it overlooks a light filled and comfortable dining area.
