Challenges You May Face When Tackling Clutter

Most people who come to us wanting to transform their home have already lived with the problem for some time. They know the space isn’t working. They can see the clutter. And yet, they haven’t been able to deal with it. The reasons are rarely straightforward, they’re a mix of practical, emotional, and often simply not knowing where to begin.

As architects and interior designers, we spend a lot of time helping clients rethink how they use their homes. Decluttering is often the essential first step, and it can be harder than anyone anticipates. Here are some of the most common challenges, and how to approach them.

Start with the easiest areas first: It’s tempting to tackle the worst room immediately, but this often leads to overwhelm and stalling. Begin somewhere you feel least attached, such as a hallway shelf or a kitchen drawer, and build confidence before moving on to more difficult spaces.

Set clear, small goals: Rather than setting out to “declutter the house,” focus on one specific area in a single session. Achievable goals maintain momentum and give you a genuine sense of progress, which matters enormously when the overall task feels daunting.

Give yourself time to reflect: Before discarding something, pause. Ask yourself honestly whether the item adds value to your life today, or whether you are holding on to it out of habit or guilt. That moment of reflection often makes the decision much easier.

Adopt the “one in, one out” principle: For every new item that enters your home, let one go. It sounds simple, but building this habit is one of the most effective ways to prevent clutter from returning once you have cleared it.

Seek support when you need it: Decluttering can be more demanding than expected, practically and personally. There is no shame in asking for help, whether from a trusted friend, a family member, or a professional organiser. Having someone alongside you can make a significant difference.

Be patient with yourself: This is rarely a quick process, and it shouldn’t be. Working through what to keep and what to let go of takes time. Patience and persistence matter more than speed.

The reward is a home that genuinely functions better, and in our experience, clients who have tackled the clutter before a renovation or redesign are far better placed to make decisions about the spaces they actually want to live in.
